The Florida Wind Mitigation Report Is Essential In Reducing Home Insurance Premiums

Every homeowner should have an up-to-date wind mitigation report. Without one, you are not taking advantage of many credits offered by insurance carriers. Some homeowners assume that because they don’t have impact windows or shutters, they don’t qualify for additional credits. This is not true. Without the report, you are not eligible for any of the other credits offered such as:

  • Building Code/ Roof Covering (FBC)

If your roof was permitted after September 1994 or March 2001, as required by some carriers, you can qualify for up to a 20% credit on your insurance policy.

  • Roof Deck Attachment

The type of nails used and how far they are spaced apart can save an additional 20% on your premium.

  • Roof to Wall Attachment

Carriers want to know how the roof is attached to the walls of your home. To receive this credit, your home must be rated with a minimum of “Clips.” If your home is rated as “Toe Nail,” you should consider contacting a firm specializing in retrofitting. In many cases, the cost to retrofit is less than the first year credit offered by most insurance carriers. The insurance credit ranges between 20% and 50%.v

  • Roof Geometry

The shape of the roof matters. The three common roof types are: hip, gable and flat. If your home is constructed with a “hip” roof, you may save an additional 10% on your premiums.

  • Opening Protection

To receive this credit, all openings must meet the State of Florida or Miami-Dade County wind codes. This includes all windows, doors (including garage) and skylights. A single door or window not meeting the requirements will prevent you from receiving this credit.
